The term “somatic” comes from the Greek word Somatikòs, meaning "of the body". It has different meanings in various branches of learning. In anatomy, somatic refers to proprioception- the part of the nervous system that controls voluntary movement and sensation and assesses relative effort and weight. This is the definition that serves as a starting point for Somatic Yoga. During the six weeks of the Somatic Yoga course, we will explore the elemental tensions created by oppositions in the body. Different stresses produce contractions in the body. If the stresses are continually repeated, as in commuting, working at a desk, or compensating for an injury, without consciously releasing the contracted muscles, the body is likely to forget how to relax those muscles. This frequently results in imbalance, inflexibility, and chronic muscle pain and fatigue. Somatic Yoga can be a useful entry point into any type of yoga practice. It helps retrain muscles and create the body awareness that supports greater alignment, balance, and relaxation both physically and emotionally. | ||
